As a marketplace where both demand and supply are growing in volume every year, Amazon remains the most advantageous starting point for e-commerce entrepreneurs around the world.
In 2023, 63% of consumers first searched for a product on Amazon when they were going to buy a product. They said the main influences on this were the wide variety of products, affordable prices and free or cheap shipping.
More than half of consumers said they shop on Amazon weekly or more often, while 67% said they shop on Amazon again at the end of the year for gifts.
As the world's most in-demand shopping platform right now, Amazon appears to have enormous potential for e-commerce entrepreneurs in 2024. In order to benefit from this enormous potential by selling from many countries around the world, you will first need to open a seller account.
We have prepared this guide for you so that you can open an account on Amazon smoothly.
Here is what you will learn in this article;
1. How to open a seller account on Amazon?
2. What are the costs of selling on Amazon?
3. What do you need to know when starting to sell on Amazon?
How to Open a Seller Account on Amazon?
Opening a seller account on Amazon is quite simple. However, we would like to point out that before opening a seller account, you need to decide on the business model you will do and evaluate the pros and cons of business models. You can take a look at this article to learn about business models:
After deciding on the business model, let's come to the registration list of the seller account:
1. Go to ''https://services.amazon.com''
2. Click Pricing > Compare Selling Plans.
In the “Pricing” section of the menu, you can compare the two types of seller plans you can open on Amazon, the Personal Seller Account and the Professional Seller Account.
Important Note: If you click on the orange “Sign up” button, you will be taken directly to the Professional Seller Account registration page. You can compare the merchant account types in the Compare Selling Plans section in the Pricing area and register by selecting the one you want.
3. Choose between Individual or Professional Merchant Account.
Proceed by choosing one of the two merchant account plans.
If you're aiming to sell more than 40 items per month, the “Professional Merchant Account” is the right account type to choose.
However, if you're just selling as a hobby, opening a personal account can save you money on monthly merchant account costs.
NOTE
You can change this later, i.e. you can open a personal account first and then convert it to a professional account, but you should be aware that when using a personal account, your store will not be able to get Buyboxes and you will not be able to use PPC campaigns on Amazon.
4. Click Create New Account.
On the screen that appears after clicking Create your account, enter your first and last name (in lower case, without Turkish characters), your email address (not used before) and the password you have set and click “Next”
After that, Amazon will send a code to your e-mail address to verify your e-mail address.
Check your e-mail address and confirm your e-mail address by typing the code received in an e-mail like the one below in the field on the screen above and click the “Verify” button.
You may then be asked for a phone number for contact and asked to verify this number with the code sent as SMS. You should make sure that this phone number has not been used before when opening a seller account on Amazon.
After confirming your email address and phone number, you will be directed to the following screen:
5. Select your Business Address and Business Type.
You must provide the following information when opening a seller account on Amazon:
Your Business Address: You must provide the official and real address of your business. I don't say your company's address because you don't need to set up a company at the moment when opening a seller account on Amazon America. Because in fact, Amazon considers sellers who want to sell individually (without establishing a company) as a company and treats them as a sole proprietorship.
Your Business Type: From the Business Type section, you can select the appropriate company type for your company, if you have a company, or Natural Person Companies if you do not have a company.
Full Name: In the “Business Name” section, you must enter your full name written on your ID card or passport completely and carefully.
Then you can continue by clicking the “Continue” button.
6. Enter other information about your business.
In this step you need to enter some information about your business below;
Trade Registry Number: If you have a company, you can enter the Trade Registry Number of your company, if not, you can proceed by entering your T.R. ID number.
T.R. Identity Number and Tax Office: If you have a company, you can enter this information of your company, if not, you can proceed by typing the Individual Tax Identification Number and tax office information that you can get from the Interactive Tax Office.
MERSIS Number: Although this information is not always asked, when it is asked, you can proceed by typing your company's Mersis Number if you have one, or your Tax Identification Number if you do not have one.
7. Enter Your Personal Information.
At this stage, Amazon will ask you to enter some personal information. This includes some personally identifiable information. You should take care to enter the information you enter in this field very carefully. Because when you open an account, Amazon will try to verify this information and if it cannot verify it, it will not open your account.
Note Make sure you enter your ID and address information correctly, because Amazon will send a physical mail to your address in the address verification section and ask you to give them the password.
8. Enter your Billing Information.
The next step is to provide Amazon with credit card information so that Amazon can bill you if necessary.
You should make sure that the credit card information you enter here is completely correct and that your credit card is open for international transactions. To start with, if you are opening a professional account, you should also make sure that your credit card has a limit of at least 39.99 USD. Otherwise Amazon may not open your account.
9. Enter your Store Information.
After you enter your credit card details, Amazon will ask you some questions about your store and the products you plan to sell. Answer these:
Your Amazon store name (you can change it later)
Whether your products have UPC codes
Are you the manufacturer and/or trademark owner of the products you will sell? (If you select “Yes” or “Some”, it will also ask if you have an official trademark registration).
After answering these questions, click “Next” to proceed.
10. Identity and Address Verification
On this screen, you will be asked to provide some documents to verify the accuracy of the identity and address information you have entered in the previous screens:
Driver's license or new ID with chip (must be scanned with a minimum resolution of 600 DPI).
A bank statement: This bank statement must be in English, so if you have a Payoneer account, you can obtain this document directly from Payoneer. If you do not have a Payoneer account, you should request an “English” statement from any bank you have an account with. The account statement you will receive from Payoneer will be as follows: After uploading your documents, click “Next” to proceed. After uploading your documents, you will schedule a video call with an Amazon representative in your language to finalize the authentication process. You can start this instantly or schedule it for later on the calendar. During the video call, the Amazon representative will ask you to show the documents (ID or passport) you uploaded to the system. The call takes about 5 minutes and if everything goes well, the representative will confirm the authentication part of your account and forward the process to the next level. After the interview, such a screen will pop up and say that the review will take up to 2 days. It usually takes 1 day. But this does not mean that your account has been opened.
Finally, there is the address verification process.
You must enter a code like the one below in the box at the bottom of the screen in the envelope sent to your address by physical mail and click the “Submit” button. It takes about 2 weeks for this mail to arrive at your address.
Once you have entered the address verification code correctly, you will be logged into your account and you will be directed to activate the 2-step verification that you will use to log into your account for security purposes.
And congratulations. You have now created your seller account to sell on Amazon US, Canada and Mexico. After that, the main page of the seller dashboard will direct you to make some settings.
Costs of Selling on Amazon - 2024
One of the biggest advantages of starting to sell on Amazon is that you can even open an account completely free of charge and get started.
However, especially when you want to sell with the Private Label business model and create your own brand, you will need a certain amount of capital as you will have expenses such as production, packaging, transportation, advertising, launch.
While this capital need may vary according to each product, according to a study conducted in 2023, 69% of sellers stated that they started sales by spending less than 5,000 USD.
In addition to your initial capital, there will also be deductions from the sales you make depending on your merchant account type and sales method (FBM or FBA);
Referral Fees: This is the commission Amazon charges you for selling on the platform. Although there are commission rates between 12-40% in each category, we can say that the average rate is 15%. For detailed review: https://sell.amazon.com/pricing#referral-fees
Individual Seller Fee: This is a flat fee per unit sold for non-professional, individual seller accounts. It is 0.99 USD per product. If you open a professional account, you'll pay a flat monthly fee of 39.99 USD instead.
Amazon FBA Fee: If you want to use Amazon's warehousing and logistics network by selling FBA on Amazon, this fee is deducted from your sales price for your products to be packaged and shipped to the customer from Amazon warehouses. These fees vary depending on the size and weight of the products you sell, but are around 3-4 USD for small products.
Other Fees: Amazon also has other contingent costs such as Storage Fee (if you're selling FBA), Refund Administration Fee, Advertising Costs, etc.

What do you need to know when starting to sell on Amazon?
Best seller ranking: Best Seller Rank (BSR):
On Amazon, each product has a ranking both within its main category and in sub-categories. This ranking starts from #1 and can range up to millions.
The more sales a product has, the higher its rank in its category and the closer it gets to #1. In other words, the product with BSR #1 in each category is the “Best selling product”.
You can find the BSR rankings of the products at the bottom of the product detail page. This is public information.
Becoming a Prime Seller on Amazon:
There are two types of customers on Amazon. One is a regular customer and the second is a Prime customer
Prime customers enjoy Amazon's Prime benefits by paying Amazon a nominal monthly or annual fee, and Amazon currently has more than 140 million Prime members in the US.
Becoming a Prime seller is possible by using Amazon's logistics and shipping network to serve Prime customers by selling FBA.
If you are selling FBA and have sufficient stock of products in Amazon warehouses, you will be in a more advantageous position for Prime customers to buy products from you.
